Filming ‘Yours, in struggle’

Snoring Roars

2022—

Snoring Roars is a production company founded by poet Lionel Fogarty and his friends, Mia Tinkler, Charlie Freedman and Alex Vella-Horne, between Undullah (south of Brisbane) and Mparntwe (Alice Springs). The filmmaking collective formed in friendship, and stand in ode to Lionel’s poetry. For the remaining members; their values, spirit and ideas as a group are led by Lionel’s words.

In 2022, they started filming a documentary about Lionel’s life. Following his nose, his mouth, his heart. We meet Lionel in his rental home in Undulah, an hour south of Brisbane. He writes furiously, speaks generously and demands graciously. Deservedly. The words he writes and speaks make demands of the witness to the comedies and tragedies of his many lives. He is a painter, a poet and a political fighter.

Before making this film, Snoring Roars curated the first exhibition of Lionel’s paintings in Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Before that, members Mia Tinkler and Alex Vella-Horne edited his most recent book of poetry published by Giramondo earlier that year.
